Junior Kindergarten Frequently Asked Questions:

How old does my child need to be to enter the Junior Kindergarten class?

Your child needs to be 4 years old by September 30th.

How long is the Junior Kindergarten day?

It is a full day class which is the same as all the other grade levels.  Children need to be in their homeroom by 8:00 a.m. and dismissal is at 2:50 p.m.

What is the curriculum overview look like?

The curriculum is designed to prepare children for the Kindergarten program.  Classes include: Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science, Technology, Art, Music, PE and World Languages (French and Spanish).

Are the children tested throughout the year?

Yes, the teachers evaluate the children’s performance in language arts, reading, math and handwriting.  They assess them using; daily work, small group work, teacher assessments, Literacy/Math stations, Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS).

Do the students receive Report Cards?

Yes, they receive a Report Card every 9 weeks as do all the grades.

Do the students go to mass?

Yes, they attend mass starting in January.  They are paired with a 7th grade Mass Buddy who attends school wide Masses and prayer services with them.

Do the children have recess?

Yes, they go out to recess twice for 30 minutes.  One recess is in the morning and one is in the afternoon.

Do the children have a rest time?

Yes, they have a rest time once during the day.

Do the children go to the cafeteria?

No the children eat in their classrooms, but a bagged lunch can be purchased which is delivered to the classroom.  A snack time is also provided.
