Algebra (Including Algebra 1 for High School Credit)
In eighth grade, all students will take Algebra I for high school credit. Some students may test into an Advanced Algebra I class. Our students have experienced great success on the diocesan Algebra exam. Graduates report that they have been well prepared for the next level math class (Algebra II or Geometry) upon entering high school.
Math classes are grouped by ability in the middle school. Students are assessed at the end of 5th, 6th and 7thgrade to determine math placement for the next year. There are 3 levels that progress through the same curriculum at a pace regulated by the ability of the group. In 7th grade students take Pre-Algebra to prepare them for Algebra I in 8th grade.
- Students are never “locked” into any math group. The groups are fluid so that students can move from one level to the next throughout the middle school years as indicated by their progress in math.
- Each year teacher recommendation is taken into consideration along with the scores from the assessments.
- 8th grade students must pass a diocesan exit exam in May in order to receive the high school credit on their transcript.
